Earlier this week, the Chicago Fire announced the signing of Mexican left-back Alonso Aceves on a season-long loan from Pachuca. We spoke with him after the first team training session on Friday for his first official interview as a Fire player.
How do you feel about becoming a new Chicago Fire player?
Alonso Aceves: Very good and happy to be here and to be a part of a great club. I also feel very happy with how the people of the club and of the city have received me.
What attracts you about Chicago Fire’s project?
Aceves: I like that the club wants to compete and that it is made up of many young players. And I think that gives us a chance to qualify for the playoffs and hopefully to win championships.
Regarding the MLS, how familiar are you with the league and what are your expectations?
Aceves: Pretty high. I think that MLS has improved a lot at the football level, which I believe is what was missing. But now with the quality of players they have brought, as well as the players they have developed, I think it has given MLS a very good level and it will be very competitive.
What are your first impressions of the team and our city?
Aceves: Incredible, the city is very beautiful. It is very cold, but I know it’s because of the winter season. But in general, very good.
Chicago has a great history with Mexican players, like Cuauhtémoc Blanco and Pavel Pardo. Were you familiar with the Chicago Fire before you arrived?
Aceves: Yes of course, I knew the club. I think I am the fourth or fifth Mexican to play for this club. I feel honored, and with a lot of responsibility to do it in the best way possible.
You have played for Pachuca, Real Oviedo, and the U-21 Mexican national team. How have these experiences impacted your development?
Aceves: I believe that I have learned a lot from each team. I also think that we never stop learning. I have experienced different styles of soccer, and I hope that I can implement what I have learned. As well as learn a different style here.
Have you spoken yet with the other Mexican at the club, Jairo Torres?
Aceves: Yes, from the beginning we have been in contact, and we have a good relationship. We have been rivals since we were little. And it’s good that we finally have the opportunity to play together.
For fans who haven’t seen you play, how would you describe yourself as a player?
Aceves: A fast player, very intense. I like to defend, but you also have to attack to score goals.
And finally, do you have a message for Fire fans?
Aceves: Yes of course. See you this Saturday, and we hope to have all your support to start getting the results we need.
